Safe to Spend

What Is Safe to Spend?

Safe to Spend is the amount of money you can actually spend right now — your available balance, minus upcoming commitments and money you’ve deliberately reserved. It answers "how much can I spend?", not just "how much do I have?"

Why your bank balance isn’t the full picture

A bank balance answers one question: how much money is currently sitting in the account. It doesn’t know that rent is due in five days, that a supplier invoice is overdue, or that ₦500,000 of that balance is already earmarked for an emergency fund. Spend against the raw balance and you can end up short when a real bill actually lands.

Safe to Spend separates what’s truly free to use from what’s already spoken for, using two concepts: upcoming commitments (money you know is going out soon) and reserved money (money you’ve chosen to set aside).

The Safe to Spend formula

The calculation is deliberately simple and never hidden from you:

Safe to Spend = Available Balance − Upcoming Commitments − Reserved Money

Total available₦2,450,000
Upcoming commitments−₦730,000
Reserved−₦800,000
Safe to Spend₦920,000

The figures above are only an example — Owoye calculates this dynamically from your real connected accounts, real commitments, and real reservations, every time you open the app. If your commitments and reservations ever add up to more than your balance, Owoye tells you plainly how much you’re short by, rather than quietly showing zero.

How Owoye finds commitments automatically

Rather than requiring you to type in every recurring bill by hand, Owoye looks at your transaction history for patterns — the same payment, a similar amount, on a regular schedule (weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly) — and surfaces it as a suggestion: "You appear to pay ₦25,000 for this every month. Add it as a commitment?"

Nothing is ever added silently. You confirm, edit, or dismiss every suggestion, and once you’ve decided, Owoye doesn’t ask about that same pattern again.

Frequently asked questions

Safe to Spend is the amount of money Owoye estimates you can freely spend after accounting for upcoming commitments and money you’ve deliberately reserved. It’s your available balance minus what’s already spoken for.

Safe to Spend = Available Balance − Upcoming Commitments − Reserved Money. Available Balance is the live total across your connected bank accounts. Upcoming Commitments are bills and repeating expenses due soon. Reserved Money is anything you’ve set aside on purpose, like an emergency fund.

No — and that’s the point. Your bank balance shows every naira sitting in your account, including money you already owe or have set aside. Safe to Spend shows what’s actually free to use.

You can add them yourself, or let Owoye find them for you. Owoye looks at your transaction history for patterns — the same payment, roughly the same amount, on a regular schedule — and suggests it as a commitment. Nothing is added automatically; you confirm, edit, or dismiss each suggestion first.
